San Bruno Mountain Hill Climb
Happy New Riding Year to all ThirstyBears!
So the season starts on a sky blue and ice cold January 1st. at the San Bruno Mountain Hill Climb .
The race is basically just one quick sprint up the San Bruno Mountain. 7-8% up Guadalupe Canyon, right turn into San Bruno Mtn County Park, back under Guadalupe Canyon to Radio Road with narrow switchbacks and grades to 10%. Total distance is a mer 3.5 miles, but it sure gets your heart beating.
“The race started pretty relaxed & friendly for a 15-minute hill climb, which was a pleasant surprise since it’s often the first five minutes that feel the worst. But around 1.2 miles where it steepens,Costa had seen enough and started throwing in 600 watt surges that no one could match; at 120 pounds 600 watts goes a long way! “- Chriss Phipps race report on CyclingIllustrated.com
Chris Phipps, Jenny Wong, and Piers Barry all got 3rd. I came across briefly after Piers as I had to carry a few extra pounds gained during Christmas. Congrats everyone! Chris could have won the 35+123 race with one leg, but opted to compete with the Pro12 and getting beat by a Garmin semi-pro who could have been his son. Actually, the 15-year-old kind of looks like his son ;-).
We got great support from Hans and Joe, who made the trip out from Marin to cheer us on. Wonder why they did not participate themselves as they made the ride all the way up to the top?
Thanks to Peninsula Velo Cycling Club for getting up early and organizing this great ‘burn out the New Years alcohol’ race.
